I have a question concerning a variation that I have noted in hallmarks on 4 of the 5 Westmorland patterns (George & Martha, John & Priscilla, Lady Hilton, and Milburn Rose). I have not noted this variation on their 5th pattern (Enchanting Orchid). The variation of the hallmark is as follows: Westmorland,Ram's head logo, Sterling(standard hallmark), but the variation is followed by 3 dots and a dash (. . . - ). I have observed these additional marks on pieces that I have been able to verify were originally purchased in 1946 or at an earlier date, but never on the Enchanting Orchid pattern (which was not issued until @1950) and not on items of the aforementioned patterns that were purchased after 1946. In regards to the matter of date of purchase I am referring to the silver having been bought new from Westmorland and not on the secondary/estate market. Does anyone have any information or thoughts on this hallmark variation? I have a possible theory...what do you think? IP: Logged |
