I have a 6 piece place setting of Siam silver (that is gold washed) that was given to me as a wedding gift. My future father-in-law bought is while in Viet Nam. It is heavily tarnished. My jeweler told me not to use 'regular' silver cleaner on/over the siam design. Does anyone know anything obout this and what I should do? IP: Logged |

Can you tell me if you flatware has a black inlaid design? I think if you were to use a mild silver polish it would do a fine job of cleaning your silver. If properly guilded it should not tarnish since gold is inert to the tarnishing agents of sulfide and oxides. Can you send us an image? IP: Logged |

If you haven't already, you might try soap and water. I like to use the original Dawn but any ordinary plain liquid soap should do fine. Try to avoid the soaps with all those special fragrances and ingredients. After the soap and water, dry throughly with a soft towel. If it still needs cleaning then reach for one of the "cleaning dips" like "Tarnex". After this, use the soap and water again and then dry throughly. Remember most (nearly all) polishes incorporate an abrasive in their formula. Abrasives make things look clean and shiney by removing the top layers of the metals. Fred is correct about gold being inert. So if it has been properly guilded , then you don't want to remove the gold so start with the soap & water. IP: Logged |
