[01-1046] I have some sterling flatware, which I think was my grandmother's (around 1920-30). The mark on the back of the pieces is three letters, each in a diamond, with the three diamonds being connected at a side point. The letters look like S, S, and a C or an O. After the diamonds, it says "PAT-17." The pattern is geometric, in a zig-zag shape along the edge of the pieces. Sorry not to have pictures; haven't mastered that yet. Thanks for any help in identifying this pattern. IP: Logged |

Believe it or not, I have seen a piece with the exact same mark and it sounds like the same pattern. Unfortunately, I have been unable to identify the maker, and the pattern is not sterling, but silverplate. The PAT-17 mark tells us it was patented in 1917, and is American. American 20th century sterling will be marked STERLING 99.999% of the time. The fact that your pieces are not marked sterling makes them almost certainly silverplate. I will see if I can get a picture of the piece I know so we can compare the pattern. I hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Is this your pattern? If it is, it is the same plated pattern I discussed before. Brent IP: Logged |

Brent, the photo you posted is definitely my pattern. I also sent a query to replacements and got a very fast reply. While the picture they included is not the best, from the decoration at the end of the fork, it appears that they have sent a picture of my pattern. They identify it as "ADAM (SILVERPLATE, 1914, HOLLOWWARE) by W D SMITH SLVR CO [WDIADA, Pattern #: 1914 The manufacturer being W.D. Smith Silver Company would account for the S.S.C. in the diamonds on the back of the piece. It is also available in sterling in a pattern by the same name but made by National Silver. Looks like the mystery is solved. Thanks again for your help. Terry IP: Logged |
