Help!!! I just went into a silver chest and found mold!!! A google search suggests using bleach, borax, or baking soda to remove mold from fabric or wood. I always avoid getting bleach in contact with silver, but the chest stinks and the silver cannot be used without thorough washing because it smells, too. I need to get rid of the mold or I have to destroy the chest. What can I do to remove mold from the interior of a silver chest in a way that will not hurt the silver. Hope someone out there has a solution. IP: Logged |

Hi, Unless the chest is specially designed for your service (i.e. fitted compartments), there is no reason not to get yourself a new chest. If your service is a standard size (no more than 12 place settings), you should be able to find a serviceable used chest for under $50. If you have an unusually large set or one with many servers, you may need to purchase a new chest. Still, you aren't looking at a tremendous amount of money. At any rate, unless there is a very good reason to try to rehabilitate the existing chest, I'd say dump it. If you really want to try to salvage the old one, you will probably have to remove the lining material and replace it. Pacific Silver Cloth is a commercially available product that is about the same as what most manufacturers use to line their chests. I don't think you will be able to get rid of the mold on the existing fabric without damaging it, or the wood, or both. Brent IP: Logged |

I have had luck using odor absorbing kitty litter in silver chests. First get the chest really dry, use a heat lamp if possilbe. Then brush off all the curd, use the vacuum hose. Fill with kitty litter and let sit for a few days. On the other hand, it is easier to just get another chest. IP: Logged |
