I should know this but what do the letters HC in a description of sterling flatware mean? The piece in concern is solid sterling. I thought once that it stood for high carbon or hollow core but neither would apply in this case. IP: Logged |

These things vary by: maker type of piece hollow or flat ware period of manufacture country of origin placement in the sequence of marks alphabet used (in Russian these translate as NS) So, we need to know a lot more before we can give an answer. IP: Logged |

If the HC appears in an ad or auction, it means 'highly collectible'. IP: Logged |

Sorry, I saw the letters in an auction but pretty sure they lifted the description from the Replacements, Ltd. site. I looked there but could not seem to find an explanation for their codes. Thanks for any help. IP: Logged |

It appears, looking at the various listings there, that HC means a made up piece, ie something not originally made in the pattern that they will cobble up if desired. If true, it helps explain some of the wacky items floating around these days. IP: Logged |

WEV, It looks like you are correct on this one. I emailed Replacements, Ltd. (didn't think to do that first) and found that HC means hand crafted by Replacements, Ltd. IP: Logged |
