How do I identify sterling silver flatware by patent number. That's just about all I can identify (other than the word sterling) on my various patterns. I tried the patent office but that was impossible. IP: Logged |

There is another way. Find a company that sells replacement pieces and see if their site contains photos of pieces that matches yours. I warn you, though, this will be like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack if you cannot narrow it down more. Even if you cannot read the marks, can you clean the piece and post a photo of the pattern and hallmark? Even if it is only partly legible, some one may be able to figure it out. Good luck, TM IP: Logged |

Sometimes it is faster and easier to post here photos of the front and dback of the pattern and a closeup of any marks. IP: Logged |

Truthfully, I don't know if I have ever seen a patent number on a piece of American flatware. More often than not, flatware with a patent mark is marked PAT followed by the year it was patented. For example, Gorham's Chantilly pattern is marked PAT. 1895, since it was patented in 1895. IP: Logged |

You may also send a photo to a replacement company. Those places are a very good resource for identification. IP: Logged |
