I think I understand 925 silver and 900 silver, and I've seen some discussions on here about marks that are like 830/1000 or 930/1000, but is there such a thing as just 1000? Can anyone tell me what the 1000 on the back of this necklace might mean IP: Logged |

Hi Estelle. The "1000" should mean that the silver is 100% pure silver (versus sterling or "925" which is 92.5% pure silver). Pure silver is softer and therefore easier to work with. By the same token, it is also more susceptible to damage and bending. At a glance, your pendant looks like mid-20th century vintage and almost certainly not American. I hope this helps! p.s. you are welcome for the picture edit [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 05-03-2004).] IP: Logged |

And thanks again! That makes sense. At least I now know what 1000 means. You've given me the 'what' and the 'when', now if I could just figure out the WHERE! IP: Logged |

My first impression was that it hails from somewhere like the Middle East or near that region. But that is just a guess. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 05-03-2004).] IP: Logged |

Hmmm, could be.... also, unless I'm mistaken there's some Greek history in the family this came from... wondering now if it may have been made in Greece. Have some jewelry with turquoise stone accents set in gold that I know came from Greece, but I don't remember where this piece came from. IP: Logged |
