Hello all, I was hoping someone could tell me a little about a cross I found. It has two marks on it: "GM","925" stamp in very small square boxes on the back. About the "GM", all I can find out is it may be the makers mark of Gideon Myrick, who was born in 1736,and was a Goldsmith. Thats all the info I can find on him. I know the "925" stands for sterling silver, but any info on the "GM", would be greatly appreciated... IP: Logged |

I'm groping in the dark here a little, but doesn't 925 suggest an origin other than America (Sterling) and England (Lion Passant). Would it suggest that it's a Continental piece? Waylander IP: Logged |

Sorry about not registering, I just wasn't sure how often I would be using this forum. The reason this info is important to me is: My hobby is metal detecting and have found that half the fun is to trying to find out what it is, that you have found, and when and where it was made... Here are a few Pics: I know the pic of the marks don't help much, but my camera is junk. P.S. Thanks for the tip on the extra Edits, didn't notice them down there, when editing. IP: Logged |

If your camera in inadequate for close-ups, try photographing the marks through a magnifying glass. Get someone else to hold the glass, so you can use two hands to steady your camera, if you do not have a tripod to use. And it is OK for you to delete the multiple editing notations in your posting when you edit it, if they are all on the same date. IP: Logged |

In reply to your question Waylander, "Would it suggest that it's a Continental piece? ", all I know about silver is that the "925" is suposed to stand for sterling silver, 92.5% pure... I have no clue as to when, or where they used such marks... Being continental? Would that include Mexico? As mentioned in the earlier post, the "GM" mark, may be that of Gustavo Martinez, a 20th centery Silver Smith?... I have found no info on him on the Web, I guess I will try the old fashion way and goto the library Thank you! IP: Logged |

Sorry about crossing the guidelines... I was hoping to get the post into a more specific area, but that is fine... Again, here is the closest thing I can come up with for a pic of the mark itself... They appear to be raised letters. Any help with this, would be greatly appreciated... IP: Logged |

The item appears to be of 20th century manufacture. I doubt it is American. Probably Mexican, Italian, or Spanish. IP: Logged |
