Hello, I am hoping someone can help me - I have no jewellery or silver expertise. I recently found a pin in my button collection that looks to be old - it has a c clasp, not a safety clasp. It is marked on the back SILVER and MADE in GREAT BRITAIN. It has no hallmarks other than this. Is it quite a nice pin with beautiful detail and it heavy enough that it might be silver but the lack of hallmarks is bothering me. Can anyone help?? Thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

Hi. Coincidentally enough, a few minutes ago, I just posted in another jewelry topic that British sterling jewelry below a certain weight did not have to be stamped with full marks. Sometimes it was just marked SILVER. You can be sure that your piece is solid sterling. Your piece could be Victorian, or it may have been made as late as the 1950s or 1960s, when the inexpensive C-catch was still in use by some makers (especially some Scottish tourist jewelry producers). The "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" stamp leads me to believe it is later, rather than earlier. Can you post a picture. [This message has been edited by Paul Lemieux (edited 10-19-2004).] IP: Logged |

According to a London antique jewelery dealer, jewelry items constructed of silver and gold had to be hallmarked by the assay office if they were to be sold in the UK. Other pieces that were to be exported outside the UK did not have to bear hallmarks, and could be simply marked as silver by the maker.
