I have owned for a long time, a pair of art deco/neuvo "style" silver earings(or may be the real thing?? they are very decorative and have enamel work to some of the front of them.On the back to the silver work they have 925 (well I think its a nine as both earings have pin pricked design across the "9" then the letters "PPC". can anybody out there help me identify the makers marks??? Please any ideas appreciated.
Thanks DAZMIK

Can you post a picture of the earrings? That would really help me determine if the earrings are old or not. The maker's mark is not immediately familiar, but perhaps seeing a picture would help. Unfortunately Art Nouveau jewelry is very popular to reproduce these days.

I want to correct the common misconception that the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles are similar. In fact, they are polar opposites, the latter a reaction against the former.

The Art Nouveau era, beginning around 1900, was a short-lived and extravagant design period. Its imagery was derived from Japanese sources, and was typically characterized by whiplash curves, sinuous lines, succulent flora and foliage, and sensuous female figures. It seems as if patrons of Art Nouveau suddenly grew over-stimulated; the popularity of the style had waned by 1910, ushering in a transitional period of design that employed some Art Nouveau elements, and some motifs that prefigured Art Deco. A good example of this "evolution" is the silver of Unger Brothers. Before about 1900, Unger produced fairly mundane Victorian designs. Suddenly, and for about ten years, their silver and jewelry products epitomized American Art Nouveau. Then, around 1910 or so, Unger's products took on a new and much more restrained look.

The Art Deco period, ca 1925-1940, and named after L'Exposition Internationelle des Arts Décoratifs (1925), was in many ways a reaction against the decadence of the Art Nouveau era. Art Deco designs are clean, geometric, and abstract. Even human figures are often reduced to geometric shapes. When enamels are used, the colors contrast each other, rather than blend and flow like Art Nouveau enamels. Many Deco designers took inspiration from machinery and technology because of the simple and utilitarian aspects of those objects. Even though the actual "Art Deco period" is usually said to have lasted for about 15 years or so, the Art Deco sensibility had a greater influence on future artistic movements than did that of Art Nouveau.

I am going to try and send pictures of the earrings that I contacted you about yesterday.

Hope it then gives you a better idea.

Did you manage to get the pictures of the earings? Not sure if I sent them correctly.

dazmik, please see the link that Scott provided. I did receive your images, but cannot post them myself withing uploading them to my server and I have a shortage of space as it is. Your ISP should give you at least 5MB of storage for photos, etc. Once you have uploaded your images, it is then very easy to post them on this page.
