The Flagler Museum in Palm Beach, Florida will launch the exhibit "Tiffany at the World's Columbian Exposition" from January 17 to April 16, 2006. This exhibit will reunite for the first time since 1893, some of the fabulous silver objects designed and crafted by Tiffany for the Columbian Exposition.

Many of the pieces will be displayed alongside their original drawings. Some of the pieces include the Goelet Cup designed by James H. Whitehouse, Charles Osborne and Eugene J. Soligny and the Viking Punch Bowl designed by Paulding Farnham.

A catalog will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.

This sounds like a wonderful side trip if you plan to attend the January shows in the Miami area.

If you are in Palm Beach, Florida or surrounding areas between now and April 16, 2006, you should make a point of visiting the Flagler Museum to see the exhibit “Tiffany at the World’s Colombian Exposition.” Aside from the persnickety young man who sold us our $10 per person tickets who insisted that there was absolutely no accommodation for the handicapped to see the exhibit which is on the second floor and an inordinate number of museum “rules” that he was obligated to inform us of, the exhibit is worth seeing.

The outer room of the exhibit gives a good introduction to the 1893 Colombian Exposition in Chicago. The inner two rooms of the exhibit are hidden behind semi-translucent curtains which one is not quite sure at first are meant to be walked through. Once through the curtains, the lighting is unfortunately too dim to get a good view of the original drawings that accompany a good many of the pieces on display. We attended on the second day of the exhibit and were a bit surprised to see that some of the pieces had not yet arrived for installation. There were courteous little notes explaining when the missing pieces were scheduled to arrive. Among the missing pieces was the bat vase and a silver revolver. We got a little nervous when the case which should have held the die stamp for the Tiffany exposition items was empty with no note. We alerted a security guard who assured us that all was well.

There are many glorious pieces in this exhibit. We especially enjoyed the globe clock with the sun and moon circling the earth. A silver band around the equator line is inscribed with the twenty four hours with the hours between 6pm and 6am oxidized to designate evening. The globe makes one revolution every twenty four hours and is bedecked with the months of the year and the signs of the zodiac. Another favorite was the Willard A. Smith Commemorative Cup. Although not actually shown at the exposition, it was made in honor of Mr. Smith who oversaw the construction of the Transportation Building at the exposition. The fabulous receding semi-circle entrance to the building is represented on the cup.

A catalog does accompany the exhibit and is well worth purchasing for not only the Tiffany items covered but for the background on this monumental World Exposition. Our friend Dorothy also did us a tremendous service by recommending that we read in advance Erik Larson’s best selling book about the Colombian Exposition called The Devil in the White City. It really brings the whole subject matter to life.
