In 1998, The Newark Museum was given a 230-page large-format catalogue of the thousands of products in silver made by Unger Brothers in 1904 in their Newark factory. (Accession number 98.6, Gift of Robert and Gladys Koch)

That catalogue was in rough shape, but thanks to a conservation grant from the New Jersey Historical Commission, it has been thoroughly conserved, and encapsulated in mylar. Thus every leaf of this remarkable visual record of Unger's output is now accessible, and can be studied first hand by scholars and collectors alike.

Eden Sterling has done two great reproductions of the 1904 and 1905 supplemental catalogues of Unger Brothers, but neither of these gives the full impact of the original, large-format trade catalogue, in which most of the objects were published full size. Even rarer are the pages of cut glass designs at the back of the catalogue, which were also a product of Unger's Newark factory.

There are several of these Unger catalogues out in the world now--perhaps five of them from 1904 known--but this is the only one in a public collection that is accessible for firsthand study.

The catalogue is available for study by appointment. You need to contact the curator (udietz@newarkmuseum.org) to make an appointment, or contact the registrar's office (shankins@newarkmuseum.org).
