Sorry, but I also have never seen an asterisk as a part of a Tiffany mark. In his book, Carpenter doesn't say anything about this symbol either. Perhaps it would be helpful to know the exact context of its use. Could you send an image, or at least cite the entire and exact markings on your piece? IP: Logged |

I have a piece marked TIFFANY&Co. The m is in script, and the dot (period) is under the m, definitely a part of the mark. Is there any significance to the dot? IP: Logged |

Hi, This looks like Mark #24 in Carpenter. The star was used by Tiffany during the war years 1943 -1945, and it was stamped on "silverware made of domestically produced silver". IP: Logged |

Rainwater indicates that "925-1000" was not used in the Tiffany mark after 1938. Is that incorrect? IP: Logged |

I believe 925 - 1000 was in use until 1947. IP: Logged |

Because of computer problems, I have not been able to get back into this discussion since 5-22-02. It appears that the mark in question by Cardigan was not really an asterisk but a star. (At least that's what it looks like to me in the fuzzy image posted from Cardigan on 5-22.) If that is correct, Richard Kurtzman's comment about this representing Carpenter's mark no. 24 is correct. As to the "dot" cited by smfc75 and shown in the image posted on 5-25, I have no idea what this signifies. IP: Logged |

THe little dot could simply be a centerpunch (i.e. the middle of the piece) but I don't know where the mark falls. I have seen these little punctuation marks, and they don't seem to mean anything. IP: Logged |
