[01-0817] In an auction I recently acquired a small silver mug. I believe it is a christening mug? The bottom is stamped with an insignia which looks like a circle with an oval on either side. Above the insignia is stamped the word STERLING and below it the letters 756. What does this mean? The name Jean McLellan Kirk is stamped on the side of the cup. The piece is very tarnished and old-looking and has some dings around the bottom. I would appreciate any information anyone could give me about it. Thank you! IP: Logged |

756 is probably the factory/model number for the piece. Could this be what your mark is? IP: Logged |

Yes, that looks like the mark! Can you tell me what it means? IP: Logged |

Thank you very much for the information! By doing a little checking, it appears my cup was made sometime prior to 1928 (which is when the maker was bought out by another company?) I have a few more pieces of silver I've picked up here and there, going to try to figure out what they are now too. Thanks! IP: Logged |

From the style of your mug and its inscription, we might be able to pin down its date a little better. Would it be possible for you to post images of it (and any future silver you have questions about)? IP: Logged |

OK, I will try to post a photo. I don't think I can photograph the mark because it's sooooo tiny, though! IP: Logged |

Oops -- batteries on my digital camera are dead! Will have to post the pic tomorrow. Thanks for all your help! IP: Logged |

I would guess the 756 is a pattern number and has nothing to do with silver content (of course). IP: Logged |
