[26-1262] Hi, I just got a bread tray that is marked with the maker's mark of Meriden Brittania (with a number 730) and it also has the word "sterling" stamped on it as well as "Harris & Shafer." I understand from my internet research that Harris & Shafer were jewelers in Washington D.C. that retailed silver. I am wondering if I could narrow the date of the piece down, I understand that the Meriden mark was used until app. 1933 (by International Silver after it was absorbed at the end ot the 19th century). Does anyone know when Harris & Shafer went out of business (e.g., if it was 1915 then the date of the piece is narrowed down). Thanks in advance for any replies - you are all very helpful. 1n 1915 Harris and Shafer removed to 1308 F Street after 35 years at their Pennsyvania Avenue address. Very sorry, but I don't know when the company went out of business though. IP: Logged |

According to Rainwater, Harris & Schafer were listed in Washington DC directories from 1880-1938. IP: Logged |

Thought you might like to see the ad especially if it has anything to do with helping to date your piece at somewhere around 1915. It is from a June 1915 issue of the Washington Post. The ad ran over the course of a couple of months.

Interesting how the Shafer name spelling varied. I've looked at articles and references with both Schafer and Shafer spellings. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 11-19-2006).] IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your extremely helpful responses, while I know the tray is not an "important" piece, it is just beautiful and you have helped me learn more about it. Thanks!!!! Mary. IP: Logged |
