[26-1638] Hello all, I recently acquired a ladle made by James E. Blake. Can some give me some background on him. I know he was in Attleboro, MA. Just wondering if he worked alone or with other folks? IP: Logged |

The "Co" might imply others. Give me a little time to possibly get you something about this company unless anyone else can help in the meantime. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 04-22-2008).] IP: Logged |

Blake's was a large and prosperous firm, manufacturing a wide range of sterling and silverplate goods including match safes, vanity sets, novelty cork screws, etc. The factory was at the corner of South Main and Mill Street. The images below are from an acquaintance whose grandfather is the gent standing at center in the second picture below, taken c 1920.

In the 1892 Attleboro Directory, James E Blake is in a manufacturing jewelers partnership with Edward P Claflin called Blake & Claflin. Their bookkeeper was Ezekiel Blake. Blake & Claflin was formed in 1889. Their company was the result of a controlling interest buy out of Sturdy & Co. Sturdy just happens to be James' wife's maiden name? In the 1903 Attleboro Directory, James E Blake is listed as the president of The James E Blake Co, William H Blake is the secretary and Ezekiel Blake is the treasurer. The James E Blake Co incorporated in 1922 and was in business until 1938. Judging by the U S Federal Census's, William and Ezekiel are both James' older brothers. The James E Blake Co trademark is distinctive. Any chance of an image of your piece including the mark. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 04-22-2008).] IP: Logged |

The pictures and info are awesome!! It is really neat to look at the folks faces that may have made this piece. I will try and find some more info on it and add to what you have given. TYTYTY IP: Logged |
