I have a butter dish, very elaborate. The lid does not remove it slides/rolls back to reveal the butter tray inside. The whole thing sits up higher than a normal butter tray on legs with claw feet. The mark says B.Rogers Silver CO. Silver on Copper, Looks like the F is pretty much worn away. It has the crown trade mark with the 18 on one side of the bottom of the crown and the 83 on the other side of the bottom of crown. How can I tell how old it is?? IP: Logged |

The mark you have, especially the "silver on copper" works suggest that it is 20th century. Your description, however, suggests a Victorian era piece. Marks are revealing, but the form and style give you the most help. If this is a colonial revival thing (legs with claw feet conjures up two different images, one victorian, one colonial) IP: Logged |

It would help me, yes. I'd love to have input from others as to the marks...but seeing what your piece looks like would be very illuminating. IP: Logged |

There are seventeen posts on the F.B. Rogers 1883 crown mark in the Silverplate Forum, so probably not worth repeating all that. Unfortunately, no catalog of F.B. Rogers items has been published, so it is difficult to date their wares. In this case, I agree that "silver on copper" probably means 20th century, and perhaps an "antique" reproduction. A photo could help. [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 05-14-2003).] IP: Logged |
