I received a ton of Gorhan old-medici from my grandparents. Included were some items that don't appear to include any known Gorham trademark. One is a 13" long silver spoon (see picture) with a G then what appears to me to be a clover, then 4 then 8. This does not conform to any research I've done on English, American or German silver. Can anyone tell me anything?

Also included was a set of what I presume to be dessert forks and knives with mother-of-pearl handles and what appears to be 4 crowns as a maker's mark. The crowns don't seem identical to me, but maybe that's just wear and tear.

Anyone know anything about this maker and how to properly describe these forks/knives (eg dessert, salad, etc.)? Any help greatly appreciated! --Jan Crane

Oops! Forgot to indicate the size of the mother-of-pearl handled knives/forks. The forks are 6.5" and the knives are 7-3/4" if that helps determine what to call them...

Thanks again! --Jan Crane

browsers/unix servers don't like spaces in url's so I substituted %20 for the spaces. I also replaced the <> with [].

Hi Jan,

Your big spoon is, unfortunately, modern American silverplate. The mark is that used by Gerity Products, Inc. of Toledo, OH. Their pieces are big and impressive and of good quality, but they are plate, and fairly common.

As for the knives and forks, the marks look like those of an English silverplater, but I'm afraid I can't place it offhand. Are there any marks on the ferrule, the silver bit between the blade and the handle? How big are the knives and forks?

Brent

Thanks for the info on the big spoon, Brent. I edited the previous post to describe the sizes, and no, there are no identifying marks on the ferrule. What a puzzle, since if you look closely at the crowns, I'm not even sure all four of them *are* crowns! --Jan

The could be fleur-de-lis, or Prince of Wales feathers.
