I would like to identify the maker of a set of sterling Napkin Rings from Birmingham circa 1912. The mark looks to be "PPL". Can someone help?

Neither "The Silversmiths of Birmingham..."
by Crisp Jones, nor the 'new' Jackson show a maker with a "PPL" stamp. Are you sure the napkin rings are Birmingham and not North American?

As best I could tell (the internet provides you with enough knowledge to be dangerous), the anchor indicates Birmingham, the lion indicates that it is sterling and the lower-case, script 'M' indicates 1912. I may be misreading the letters of the maker though and have included the image here.

Greg,
The hallmark belongs to Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd who were manufacturing jewellers carrying on business in Birmingham and London. The company was registered on June 1898.

The hallmark is actually PPLd not PPL.

That's great! Thanks for the info. Would you know how I can go about finding out more information about the company (e.g. - whether or not they're still in business)?

Greg,
There is more information about the company in Culme's book at page 360.
Culme states that as at the time of writing (1987) "Payton, Pepper & Sons Ltd are presently at 36 Frederick Street, Birmingham."
If you are visiting Birmingham (England) soon, you might like to check them out! Or perhaps a letter might do the trick.
