My wife bought a silver platter at a white elephant sale, it says "Rogers & Bro" with the number "1772" stamped under it on the back. I'd like to find out more about it. What I've learned so far is that it was perhaps made by Rogers and Brother in Waterbury CT. which merged with International Silver in 1898. She paid 25 cents so if we use it once we got our use out of it. I am no collector but thought someone here might know something. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Welcome to the Forums. You are on the right track. There were numerous different "Rogers" companies, among many others, which combined into International Silver in 1898. The trade names and marks of these companies continued to be used by International for many years after the formation of the company, and some are still in use today. So, the trademark on your piece can not be used to date it very precisely. If you could send pictures of the tray or the mark, we could probably give you a good idea of the date, based on the style. In all likelihood you have a mid to late 20th century piece, of little collectible value but certainly useful. I hope this helps! Brent IP: Logged |

Thanks for the photos. As I suspected, your tray is mid to late 20th Century, certainly no older than about 1950. It falls in the unfortunate category of "Wedding gift" silverplate: pieces that were received at a wedding 30 or 40 years ago, put away for special occasions, then brought out of the closet 30 years later, completely black with tarnish and basically unused, headed for the church rummage sale. There are thousands of similar trays out there, all roughly the same and unfortunately worth very little on the collectible market. It seems a nice tray, though, and I hope you will enjoy using it. I sure appreciate the benefit of your expertise. As I said, my wife likes it and for 25 cents and some elbow grease we ended up with a nice platter easily worth ten times what we paid! :-) Thanks again. IP: Logged |
