The partnershp of Herman J. Harris and Alanson D. Wilcox began in Albany, New York c 1840, but soon removed to Troy, New York where they conducted business until the late 1850's. Belden, which shows both marks, notes directory listings for the firm as jewelry and watchmakers in Albany between 1846 and 1853. Mark number 1 is erroneously attributed to the Connecticut firm of Hart & Wilcox (unrelated) by Ensko, though he also lists Harris & Wilcox. There is little information on Wilcox. Herman Harris was born to Joseph Harris and Esther Wise about 1804 in Eaton NY. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 10-28-99).] IP: Logged |

I have a couple of spoons with mark #1 above without 'Troy' but marked 'N.E.YOUNG.'. Does anyone happen to know the 'where?' and 'when?' of this retailer? IP: Logged |

quote: I have a tablespoon marked by the same retailer, with S. D. Brower's pseudo-hallmarks D, bust and eagle. I suspect that he worked in the Albany-Troy area, c.1850-60. IP: Logged |

In the 1850 Federal Census, Connecticut born S D Brower is working in Albany. He claims the profession silversmith. In 1870, Sperry D Brower of Connecticut is still found in Albany, and he remains in a silver profession (silver ware?). [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 08-02-2007).] IP: Logged |

quote: Here's a bit of information on an Alanson D Wilcox that may or may not prove useful: the 1860 U. S. Federal Census for Troy, NY lists Vermont born Wilcox in the same household as Hiram Carpenter. Wilcox's year of birth is about 1824. He and Hiram are both jewelers. One of Hiram's sons is a jewelers apprentice, and another of Hiram's sons has the first name Alanson which leads me to speculate that Alanson and Hiram are probably brothers in-law. IP: Logged |
