This pitcher was made by Nicholas J. Bogert, father of the renowned silversmith William Bogert who was a major supplier to Tiffany & Co.

A lovely piece. I have been looking into the Bogert family for my tree project and they are a tough nut. Though prominent in both business and military affairs, details of their private history are few. There was a close tie to the Forbes family; several members, including Colin Van Gelder Forbes, are buried in Nicholas Bogert's plot in Walden Orange NY and at least two Forbes women married Bogert men. I noticed in Darling's New York a D. G. Bogert, location unknown, whose mark looks very similar in form to Nicholas'. I have run across mention of a Dante Gabriel Bogert who would have been, from my rough figuring, either a nephew or cousin to Nicholas. I've no evidence this is the silversmith, but seems a reasonable guess at this point. Any information on this interesting family would be greatly appreciated. IP: Logged |
