Over the weekend I picked up four fiddleback 7" coin silver spoons in excellent condition. I looked in my small library for the maker - T.J.Brown. The only information was c.1835, location unknown. Can anyone shed any more light on T. J. Brown. (The spoons are really nice and have the name Holmes as the monogram. IP: Logged |

This is just for future reference for anyone that might like to know. A couple of tablespoons went through my hands earlier this year that were marked T J Brown and 10-15 which of course means there was a T J Brown working in Maryland. They were really nice spoons with engraved scrolling similar to the Kirk Maryland pattern. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 05-23-2008).] IP: Logged |

Thomas J. Brown (1812 - 1886) worked as a gold- and silversmith in Baltimore from 1842 - 1884. His son, Thomas J. Brown, Jr. was also a gold- and silversmith and they worked together as Thomas J. Brown and Son (1872 - 1884). IP: Logged |

Just to round things out a bit more, Thomas Sr was also a watchmaker and two of his watchmaker apprentices were James Hayes and Thomas Cromwell. Two of his silversmith apprentices were Isaac Wilson and Phillip Stoffer. IP: Logged |
