Can anyone identify the maker's mark on a decanter I just picked up? It appears to be a French piece by "VB," but it may well be American, as it looked more like an Am. marking. It's marked vertically with a crescent moon, a star, VB, and another star. Thanks for any help you can provide! IP: Logged |

Can you post a picture of the piece and mark? Send them along to me for posting if you'd like. IP: Logged |

Sent along from Fitzhugh:
I would think it is a French/French Canadian mark, but I have no maker to suggest. Thoughts, anyone? IP: Logged |

I doubt it is French. It has a lozenge shaped cartouche, but does not follow a number of conventions for French marks. The test would be very simple. A French mark would be very small and invariably accompanied by a garantee mark, this mark can be extremely small and difficult to find. Also every separate piece of metal will have a mark. A picture of the piece and mark might help. IP: Logged |

Yes, each separate piece has a mark, and there is an accompanying "Minerva" head mark as well which appears to be in a pent/hexagonal cartouche (Paris 1838 registry?) I really can't tell. IP: Logged |

The minerva mark which introduced in 1838 but was used unchanged until the 1970's. Often you will see a piece identified as 1838 which of course is inaccurate for the most part. When I said the maker's mark didn't follow certain conventions I should have said certain conventions for antique Paris maker's marks. The piece could be either provincial or relatively modern Parisien. I couldn't find it in Lyon, or Paris books before 1875. Except for a few well known maker's the value of most French silver is not affected by the maker's mark. IP: Logged |
