Hi there, I've had this pretty 3-7/8" long, engraved master salt (or mustard?) spoon for years and as coin isn't really my main interest, haven't been able to find any information on the maker. Would love to find out anything about J.Bowman, always loved the look of this piece, fits right in with my older (mid 1800s) Scandinavian spoons. Thanks for any assistance! Cheryl IP: Logged |

I am afraid I have nothing on Mr. J. Bowman's identity, but in all likelihood he was a retailer, not a maker. I know of two other Bowman's: Elias, a silversmith working in Rochester NY c 1834 and Ezra who was a jeweler and watchmaker in Lancaster PA c 1867 and later founded the Bowman Technical College there. I recently saw a boxed set of spoons marked "J. Bowman" on eBay, and the box label named him as John Bowman, [?]70 Arch St., Philadelphia, and labelled him as a "manufacturer," but I have my doubts. The location makes sense, because your spoon is definitely in the Philadelphia style of the 1860's. I downloaded the (very fuzzy) picture of the box label. Email me for a copy. The eBay spoons were "SCALLOPED EDGE ENGRAVED," a engine-turned pattern produced by James Watts in great quantity. IP: Logged |

Here's a gentleman that could work for the maker in this thread. He is Joseph Bowman of Strasburgh, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was born in Pennsylvania in 1799. Joseph is found in directories, census's and local histories as a watchmaker, jeweler and clockmaker up to 1880. Joseph's son Edmund was born in 1824; Edmund was trained in the jewelry business by his father. Around 1855 Edmund set himself up in business in Sterling, Illinois. In the 1900 U S Federal Census for Sterling, Illinois, Edmund is listed as a retired jeweler. IP: Logged |
