I have a spoon with pseudo hallmarks and marked Yates in script. Kovel's identifies several Yates as working in upstate NY, but I don't have anything that links the mark to one of the makers. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried to link a photo-still learning this process!

Most of the "Yates" pieces I have seen are plated, but I would have to see a photo to tell if yours is. IP: Logged |

Sorry about the picture size-I thought I had it at the smallest pixel size, but apparently not. I didn't include a photo of the entire spoon, but it is a classic fiddle handle spoon and is definitely coin. IP: Logged |

That is the plated Yates mark I have seen. Often the plate is worn off, and it is brass underneath. I believe if you will test it, you will find it to be so. IP: Logged |

John Yates was a prolific producer of silverplate in Birmingham, England. Their flatware can be confused with coin silver, but if plated it will often have telltale wear-through. If your spoon has a yellowish cast to it, it may be just unplated German silver. Though I can't recall seeing this exact mark before, I think it is indeed a piece by John Yates and likely not actually coin silver. I took another look at the spoon (I am away from home during the week for work) and I agree that it is plated. Thanks for the help on this! IP: Logged |
