Okay, one more piece of coin from my meager collection. Just picked it up last month at a flea market, black and buried in a sea of undistinguished silverplate. Thought that Baldwin was probably the retailer, the marks on the left are very tiny (about 1/2 mm). Even under 30x magnification and enlarging the photo, can only make out that the first is an oval with flattened top and bottom and letter (possibly P) and the second is a hexagon. Ran across an old thread with reference to E.J.Baldwin and wondered if any more information had been unearthed. After years of researching Scandinavian pieces, finding the coin pieces very interesting, with all the family connections, etc. Baldwin & Cowles? Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |

Definitely Mr. Baldwin of Indianapolis; we run across pieces with the same mark fairly frequently out here. Brent, in Indianapolis IP: Logged |

Edwin J Baldwin and Jeremiah McLene. Edwin is listed with William Blynn in the 1850 U S Federal Census for Columbus, Ohio. Thomas S Baldwin who was William Blynn's partner at this time and Edwin J Baldwin were both born in Connecticut with Edwin being about seven years Thomas's junior. IP: Logged |
