I have a very nice fiddle-back English spoon and the duty mark is hard to read. I'm guessing it's late 18th or early 19th century. The marks are duty mark, lion facing left and C in a rectangle with the corners cut off. The makers are Brown & Marsters. I'd appreciate any information as I can't find their names in my books. ------------------ IP: Logged |

As far as I can see, without a picture, these are likely to be typical New York City pseudo-halmarks and the retailers mark of F.Brown & Marsters. The spoon will probably be from the third quarter of the c.19th. Perhaps Scott can put this in the American forum where the real experts lurk!? IP: Logged |

I have once or twice seen 19th-century teaspoons with proper English hallmarks and an American mark as retailer, where the spoon was clearly English in style. At least one was a Virginia mark, I think Mitchell & Tyler. It has been many years, though, so I can't remember the details with certainty. I always assumed it was someone who imported a few pieces for sale, probably as a special order. [This message has been edited by FWG (edited 06-29-2006).] IP: Logged |
