I am wondering if anyone out there could tell me the date of a piece I have by Wood and Hughes (it is a sterling silver calling card case/purse). It has the W&H mark where the & looks like a lying down 3. Then it has a "34" an "A" and "STERLING" Any info would be appreciated ------------------ IP: Logged |

Wood & Hughes used the horizontal "3" from 1871. The firm was succeeded by Graff, Washbourne & Dunn in 1899. ------------------ IP: Logged |

This mark has had me going crazy as to what that 3 on its side indicated. I just assumed it was another form of expressing an ampersand, meaning and! I know this is an old post but I think I may have finally have found an answer regarding the Wood & Hughes mark of the 3 on its side. According to my all knowing friend, It is the lower case Greek letter Omega. Now the question I have is why use that? What was its intended meaning if not and? Did it have anything to do with the English marks? Jersey IP: Logged |

Jersey, Wood and Hughes used various variants on "W&H." Sometimes they used the &, sometimes what looks like a backwards 3, sometimes a forwards 3, and sometimes the 3 lying on its back described in this thread. I think all those 3's are just different ways of indicating an ampersand, an abbreviation for the Latin "and," "et." I could, of course, be wrong. I'm often wrong about all sorts of things! But since we find that 3-like E in three orientations in the W&H mark, I doubt it's an omega when it's lying on it's back. IP: Logged |

As you correctly guessed, these are all forms of ampersands. IP: Logged |
