Hello everyone! A fellow silver enthusiast showed me a coin silver engraved serving spoon about 8" in length. It is marked "Michie" for Michie Bros of Cincinnati , Ohio and "12oz". What does the 12oz mark indicate? Many thanks! IP: Logged |

The 12 oz mark usually appears on silver plated items. It sometimes can mean that 12 oz of silver were used in some quantity of spoons. I think the quantity was fairly large, but it was one of the higher standards for the thickness of the silver plate. I do not believe marks like this had the backing of any government rules or regulations so it was really up to the manufacturer to determine what it meant. IP: Logged |

Thanks ahwt! I thought it meant silverplate as well, but my friend tested the spoon and it tested as silver. Could that be just because of the thickness of the plating? When looking for information on the ounce mark, I saw that Baltimore silver used an ounce mark. Does it have a different meaning in that context? Thanks!!! Kelly IP: Logged |

There was a period during which Baltimore maintained an assay office. The 11 mark denotes 11/12 or sterling quality, while 10.5 would denote silver meeting the "coin silver" standard. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 05-24-2017).] IP: Logged |
