I recently acquired an interesting coffee or tea pot. It is rather large, much larger than my pots from other services. It measures 24" around at its widest point, 10 1/2" tall, and 11" from the tip of the spout to the handle. It appears to be silver over copper (some of the silver is wearing and looks like copper showing through. The marks on the bottom are as follows: (very tiny) a small crown with the letters "VR" underneath. Then in large letters "Superior Electro Plate 1849". Lastly, very small (and partially rubbed off) an unidentified letter against a capital "H". The pot is pretty ornate with patterns and carvings all over it. It is very heavy. On the lid is a decorative finial that is attatched with a screw. I'm guessing that is not how they were attatched in the 1880's. Any information you can give me will be greatly appreciated. I can find nothing anywhere on "Superior Electro Plate" or how old this pot may be. Thanks! IP: Logged |

I can't find anything on your Superior, although there was a Superior Silver Company associated with Wilcox in Connecticut in the 19th century. Without seeing yours, it's hard to know for sure if it's 19th century. The mark suggests a 20th century origin, because of the use of 1849 and "Electro Plate" but I could be wrong. Your description sounds 19th century--but those ornate plated coffee pots were standards and then were revived, simplified, in the 20th century. Any chance of a picture? IP: Logged |

Another possibility is that the piece is English electroplate. Many U.S. platers used crowns in their marks, but the ones I've seen with the crown and the VR (for Victoria Regina (Queen Victoria)) have been English plater's marks. "Superior Electro Plate" could be a description of the wares and the illegible mark could be the initials of the maker. Pictures would definitely help. IP: Logged |
