Hi, I have a silver plate/tray that is very ornate and unique...at least from what I have seen...(which is limited I'm sure compared to most). The mark on the back is as follows: 3 separate crowns and below each crown is an encircled letter. M S C. I don't think it is very old. It also has on it- 728 silver deposit on nickel silver. I'm just curious as to its origin. Thanks in advance for your help in this matter. Sharon IP: Logged |

The marks are those of the Middletown Silver Company. The company was started in 1899 by former employees of the Middletown Plate Company after its absorbtion into International Silver. Its first incarnation lasted till 1910; it went backrupt, was re-organized several times and managed to last into the late 1930s. After a number of mergers, it eventually became part of Wallace Silversmiths. IP: Logged |

Thanks for your quick reply! I knew you guys could help me! How can I come up with a date for this item. When they became Wallace did they continue to use the MSC? Also, what do you think this piece is worth. Thanks again for your timeless wisdom....Sharon. IP: Logged |

I looked on the web for middletown silver co. and the hallmark for them was just an MSC and below the letters the name middletown silver. Did they use many different hallmarks and are the crowns indicative of a specific year? Thanks again. sharon (I hope I'm not being a nuisance) IP: Logged |

The company used a variety of marks on various types of goods. Those on your piece were specifically for silver-on-nickel silver wares. I do not know what became of the company trademarks after it was acquired by Wallace. IP: Logged |

So would you say that this piece is from c.1930's? Thanks, Sharon IP: Logged |
