I have a silver coffee pot with the marks: Eagle, Wm ROGERS, and a Star. Underneath this is the number 800. There are no circles, squares, or rectangles around any of the marks. The marks are found under one of the feet. I was told this piece was made between 1841-1847. Is this correct? Also, is this piece silver or silverplate? Thanks for all help offered!

William Rogers and his brothers were very prolific in the silver manufacturing business. The mark of an eagle, Wm Rogers and Star in a circle is the mark that William Rogers applied to coin silver spoons that he produced between 1825 and 1841. The mark of an eagle, William Rogers & Co. and Star began to be used in 1841 after William's Brother, Simeon, joined the business. The Rogers Brothers began producing silverplated wares in 1847. To be sure about your piece in question, you should provide a photo of the marks and the piece.

Hello,

I'm afraid it is silverplate. If it were the old coin silver marks, each mark would be in its own rectangular surround. Your marks were used in some form or other for many, many years. I also do not think that William Rogers made any coin silver hollowware.

You pot could have been made at any point in the past 150 years or so. A picture of the pot and the mark would help us to narrow the date range a bit smile

I hope this helps!

This is why images are important on the forums. It is also why sometimes only personal inspection and experience is the only way to come to a reasonable conclusion or guess.

Here are some of the marks being discussed. I have seen slight variations on these for example the m can switch from upper case to lower case. The m can be found with what appears to be an underscore or two dots.

Silver plate is most often seen with:

Sorry about no picture. I do have a digital photo, but can't seem to figure out how to post it. The marks are similar to the second set shown by Scott, with variations. The capital M is underscored and there is no comma after ROGERS. All else is same. Thanks for everyone's help!

Hi! I'd like my not so old, silver plate coffee pot to shine. How do I do this without removing too much of the silver plate? Thanks again.

As long as you're not using brillo or a buffing wheel, you won't remove much silver with any single polishing. Polishing damage comes from repeated polishing over many years--or the use of harsh, abrasive polishes. Silver dip--which releases a nasty sulphur smell--is a good way to start with plated things, to remove bad tarnish; then a gentle rub with a mild polish. But don't ask me which ones are mild, because the formulas change. A liquid rather than a past for plated stuff, perhaps.

Some of these plated coffee pots are stamped '900'instead of '800'. I know because in my early years of collecting, I jumped at the chance on Ebay to buy a 'coin' coffee pot for under $100. I sold it at a yard sale for $5. and wrote it off as a learning experience.
