Can someone please help me find out about an old family jewelry box? It's made of Pewter intricately patterned in flowers, leaves and borders. This is what the mark on the bottom looks like: A set of balanced scales inside a circle with Meriden at the top. On the bottom of the circle is B. Company. Outside the circle the number 85 is stamped.

I'm looking for a possible age. Thank you.

What makes you think it is pewter? Meriden was a big silver plate manufacturer in Connecticut. The forums are full of posts about this company. Please try doing a search on Meriden.

Yes! That is the box! My mother told me it was pewter years ago. She said that her mother was told it was pewter by an appraiser during the depression. It doesn't say silver anywhere on it so I always assumed she was right.

I've looked off an on over the years for info on the company, but had been told the box came over from England with an ancestor.

Can you give me any idea as to how old the box might be? Family legend places its age at around 300 years. I don't think that is true.

Thank you!

The above is from the 1886 Meriden Britannia Company catalogue. This doesn't mean your box is from 1886, it could have been made in the 1900's. It is not uncommon for silver plate to be over polished. I suspect all the silver plate is gone and since the base metal may look a bit like pewter, this made it sound better. Since it is a family heirloom you may want to get it replated.

If you use the Silver Salon Forums search function and enter Meriden Britannia you will find that there are numerous posts that mention Meriden Britannia.

I used the Silver Salon Forums search function to search the General Silver Forum for Meriden. The following search results may be of interest and/or answer your questions.

Let us know if this helps.

Dear Scott and June,

Thank you both very much for your help. I've printed the information I've found so far and put it in the box to give to my daughter. As I said the box is meant to be passed down from mother to daughter. She may want in future to invest in restoring it. It is not something I could afford to do.

Again thank you for your help.
