Hello again. Thank you for answering the question about "Our Very Best". Now please explain what they meant by "Pure Silver Metal" which is on some knives and forks I have recently acquired. Thanks for your help. IP: Logged |

I'm guessing here, but I would say that the Pure Silver Metal term refers to the coating of solid silver on a base metal such as copper. A solid silver knife would be almost impossible to use because pure silver is too soft. That is why even sterling silver is not pure silver. It is mixed with 75 parts to the 1000 of some base metal for strength. On silver plated items, the underlying base metal provides the strength so that a pure silver can be applied just as a coating. Vendors liked to used creative (and sometimes misleading) terms to describe silverplated wares to sometimes make them sound like sterling items. IP: Logged |

Thanks, June. These pieces are very confusing to me. They are not plated. There is absolutely no wear whatsoever anywhere to indicate loss of plate. Even if they were plated over hard white metal...could still be seen. I took these to a dealer and they tested to be silver...but they "look" like nickel...they are just too heavy to be nickel, though. Very strange. IP: Logged |

I would bet that "Pure Silver Metal" is just another euphemism for nickel silver, not unlike "Alaska Silver", "Nevada Silver" or "Solid Silver". It is "pure metal", and it is "silver", in color at least. Brent IP: Logged |

Can you tell us what exactly this silver test entailed? IP: Logged |

I have seen silver covered knife blades on some finer quality flatware. Is it possible that these are of this type... Have you tried a magnet on the blade? I would be curious to see if in fact the blade is steel with silver coating. IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your interest. I do not know what kind of acid test the jeweler used. Regarding the blades being silver plated, these pieces do not have attached handles. They are all one solid piece of craftsmanship. The magnet does not stick. Here is what I believe them to be: nickel with silver added into the metal. They "look" like nickel, they "feel" like nickel, only they are too heavy to be pure nickel. There must be a silver content blended into the nickel. (Magnets will not stick to nickel, either). Thanks again for all your help. [This message has been edited by Dovin (edited 03-14-2002).] IP: Logged |
