Would any one be able to confirm a date for me please? I have a very nice oak boxed fish set by Wingfield Rowbotham. From the little I can find on this company, it seems they were only in existence for a fairly short time, 1832 - 1856. Thank you!
Sue

I've checked my regular references for American and English silver maker's marks and couldn't find Wingfield Rowbotham. Could this be the retailer? Where did you get your date information and in what country was the fish set made?

The set is Sheffield English and I got the only info I could find on the company from a search engine - which referred to Wingfield Rowbotham as existing between 1832 - 1856. The mark on the cutlery is EPNS Wingfield but the full name is on the inside of the lid, so I suppose they could be a retailer. Does that make more sense? And thank you for going to so much trouble, June.

It sounds possible that Wingfield is the blade maker. Blade makers sometimes plated their steel blades with silver, hence the mark EPNS - Electro plated nickle silver. You may want to check for further marks on the handles or other ornaments if they are silver for evidence of a silver manufacturer, if applicable.

Wingfield, Rowbotham & Co.
Sheffield, England
1889-1929

They made plated wares (holloware, Britannia base metal wares, and cutlery).
