I'm asking this question out of idle curiosity. Does anyone know whether Wm Rogers ever produced .800 silver (presumably it would have been for export?) or did they ever own a continental subsidiary? Not knowing much about it, I poked around eBay for a while but found just one example of Wm Rogers Sterling, the mark being bracketed by anchors. On the other hand there are a few silverplate items with an eagle and star mark similar to this one.

I don't know the answer to your question, but, the "(eagle) Wm Rogers (star)" mark was used by three entities:
As far as the auction item, the seller shows a picture of the mark used by William Rogers which is not the mark used on the teapot. The teapot itself is pictured in Rainwater's "American Silverplate". She indicates that it is International Silver Co's most popular pattern in inexpensive quality silverplate and as of 2000 was still in production. So, it seems to me that the "antique, 800 silver" item being sold is NOT . The mark was not identified correctly and the "800" is a pattern or part number, not an indication of silver content. Hope this helps. [This message has been edited by smfc75 (edited 09-11-2002).] IP: Logged |

Thank you for your answer. If, as it appears, the mark is on a foot then I'd expect to be more extensive marking on the body. A neat bit of selective info. A bit sad to see that someone bid the 300 bucks for it 2 minutes before the close. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

Too bad the buyer (and the seller) didn't search these forums first. The "800" (and the "900"!) marks have been discussed before. IP: Logged |

My apologies! Searching the forums does provide the complete answer. I thought I had done considerable searching - now I wonder whether I messed up the search on the forum or slipped up and didn't do it. Signing off embarrassed! IP: Logged |
