I have this marking,Silver Mark H H & S and 605 on a sterling dish that kind of looks like a lare petal, Then on the high end a hook comes up and it looks like craters on the moon as well as the three feet. There is also another mark rd 180181. Can you tell me anything about this mark?

Thank you,
Shelly

What leads you to believe that this is a "sterling dish"? Also, what is a "lare"?

Aha! I just figured it out. It's "large."

Your dish is English, and almost certainly silverplate. HH&S stands for Henry Hobson & Sons of Sheffield and London, England. The Rd number is an English design registration number, similar to a US copyright or patent. Unless you have a lion passant mark as well, your piece is plated.

As for what it is, it sounds somewhat like a grape stand, which is often in the form of a leaf with a high hook curving up from the stem end to hold the grapes. The "craters" may be simulated worm holes on the leaf. A picture would help!

Hello I am not sure why I think this is sterling except it feels like many pieces of sterling I have from this estate. I am attaching a picture. Are you able to help me?

Thanks,
Shelly

The registration number indicates that the design was registered in 1891.

I'm afraid it is still silverplate. It is definitely English, and English sterling will have a lion passant mark, as well as a date letter and normally a town mark. As to what it is, that will depend on the size. If it is about 8 or 9 inches wide, it could still be a grape stand. If it is smaller, I'm not quite sure what it would be.

I hope this helps!
