I recently purchased 8 forks and knives with bakelite handles. The cutlery is inscribed with Joseph Rodgers & Sons Cutlers to His Majesty and have the Maltese cross. In addition is a crown with E on one side and R on the other side of it. Could you please tell me anything about the set. Thanks IP: Logged |

It sounds like your set is from the late 1930s/1940s. It is English. the E (crown) R stands for Edward Regina VIII, since the mark says "...His Majesty." (otherwise it would be for Queen Elizabeth). "Cutlers to His Majesty" doesn't necessarily mean that Jos. Rodgers & Sons were the exclusive cutlers to the king...it just means that they received at least one commision. Since they are Bakelite handles, they would have been made during Edward VIII's reign (1937-1953 I think) rather than Edward VII (1901-1910). Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Jospeh Rodgers & Sons was, and continues to be, one of the largest cutlery and silverplate firms in England. They are located in Sheffield. Their Maltese cross trademark has been used by the firm and its ancestors since 1682! IP: Logged |
