Hi all. I know nothing about silver, but I just purchased what I think are two solid silver serving pieces about 13" long with the marks G, then what looks like a 4 leaf clover, then 48. Can someone help identify this. The back has a spine up the middle of the spoon and the front is plain with a slight rib up the center of the handle. Thanks in advance, Judy

I am afraid the salad set is plated. If they were sold to you as sterling of solid silver you should be able to get your money back... I just saw a set identical to your's yesterday in a shop here in Tucson and they were identified as sterling and selling for $118. They also had a pair of serving spoons each at $75. I do not know the maker of these items. Perhaps others here could tell you who manufactures these items. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the reply. It sure looks solid to me. There are a few deep pits and the metal still looks the same. Still, you are probably right. Can you tell me which shop you saw the set in? I'd love to bring it over to them to check it out in Tucson. Judy IP: Logged |

A spoon like yours is on Ebay Item # 1438777213, with the same marks and in it's original packaging. view this gorgeous very large (13 1/2"long) silver serving spoon, a reproduction of a 1740 Englsh design. Made by Gerity, comes in its original box with brown tarnish protector cloth bag. Hallmarked with a "G", a flower, #4, #8. Nice & shiny & heavy quality piece. Probably silver plate as its not marked sterling. No dents, dings or scratches. Near mint condition with only a few expected pinpoint spots of wear only in the bowl. Hope this helps you. The shop in Tucson with the spoons and salad serving set, is on the corner of Dodge and Grant. IP: Logged |

It is a "Hanoverian" (or, more precisely, Hanoverian with rat tail, also referred to as "Rat Tail") pattern. Produced in England from 1710 to about 1730. Revived in England in the late 19th century and still being made today. [This message has been edited by Stephen (edited 04-25-2003).] IP: Logged |
