I'm trying to findout what "Mandal Silver" means on a small 1/2 pint tankard I recently aquired. It has 4 or 5 hallmarks on it, no of which I can find anything about. -One is a small diamond with crown at the top point, a "6" at the bottom point, "G" at the left point and an "R" at the right point, (all marks inside the diamond. -Another is the letter "D" with the number 24 under it. Both of these, along with the 1/2 Pint and Mandal Silver marks are indented outside at the top of the rim. On the bottom are initials "G. C" which are below a circle that contains what honestly looks like the General Electric script "GE". at the top of the circle juts a thin tall triangle that has a line cutting it about in half virtically, and under it hangs what could be construed as a striped flag. There is also a tiny mark that might be a "c" or small "e". I'm wondering if this is some type of pewter or someting. It does not polish and feel like silver does. It also has "Rising Sun Hotel." engraved on it. Hope someone who knows something about this can help me understand more about this piece. Thanks, Kathy IP: Logged |

Although your description of the marks are very good, this is one of those situations where a picture really is worth a thousand words. The diamond mark is an English registry mark from between 1842 and 1867. The number 6 at the bottom of the diamond is a parcel number that is a code that indicates the person or company that registered the piece. The G on the lefthand point of the diamond indicates that the piece was made in February. The year should be indicated by a letter under a Roman numeral at the top of the diamond. Take another look at the "crown" at the top of the diamond. It should be a circle at the top of the diamond with a Roman numeral I to indicate metal under which should be a letter. There should also be a number in the right hand point of the diamond. This is the day of the month that the piece was made. Correct interpretation of the marks in the registry mark should make the dentification of the other marks easier. IP: Logged |
