I had a query about the maker of these spoons. They appear from the style of the marks and their form to be Sheffield plate. Can anyone put a name to the initials?

George Mappin's book of Sheffield and electroplate marks lists a J. G. Graves, working in Sheffield 1900-1914. Your mark is not shown, but many of the platers used mulitple marks, so maybe it is him. As for the CS, it probably refers to some euphemism for nickel silver. IP: Logged |

The mark pictured above is definitely a cutlery mark of J.G. (John George) Graves, same location and dates as described above. I would guess that the "CS" is "GS" for German silver. Of course, neither German nor silver. Ref: E.R. Matheau-Raven, "The Identification and Dating of Sheffield Electroplated Wares 1843-1943". IP: Logged |
