I have recently aquired a piece which appears to be a simple swinging box which is slightly counterweighted at top to help continue the swinging motion. No idea of its purpose. Stamped in the bottom is "ROGERS & SMITH CO., NEW HAVEN, CONN.". Then is stamped "PAT OCT 22, 1878". The piece is numbered. Has anyone seen anything resembling what I've described, or have any information on this company and its products? I would appreciatte any information. EW IP: Logged |

Hi, If you scroll down the list of topics, you will find a post on Rogers, Smith & Co. My answer there should tell you what you want to know about the company. They were supposedly in New Haven from 1862 to 1877. Perhaps the patent date was added to a piece that had already been produced. As for the piece itself, what does it swing on? Is it handled, like a basket, or does it pivot on rods? How big is it? We need a bit more to go on. Brent IP: Logged |

Here is Eric's piece. Any ideas on what it is supposed to be? We know that sometimes the exact same items can be found with Meriden Britannia Co. OR Rogers, Smith & Co. marks; perhaps this piece appears in a Meriden Britannia Co. catalog? Brent IP: Logged |

With the fish, I'd say it is a sardine box. The box itself may have had a glass insert and would have had a silverplated lid. Meriden's catalogs of the 1870s showed many different styles of sardine boxes, some with handles or frames, some without. [This message has been edited by smfc75 (edited 12-14-2002).] IP: Logged |
