[21-0732] Hi there! I have a set of two lead crystal "pate dishes" with two small sterling silver serving knives. They are in a presentation case. The knives are stamped Anchor/lion/capital "O" I have found conflicting evidence about it's date and was wondering if anyone could help?
However, one source says that the capital 0 indicates a date mark of 1940, whereas another source states because of the shape of the box it is in, it indicates 1913. Makers are B.B.S.L Can anyone help? IP: Logged |

Your source is right that the date letter cycles vary in the style of letters (lower or upper case, roman, gothic, italic etc)as well as the style of the box they are in. According to list available on the internet at British Silver Marks -Birmingham 1773 - 1999 1913 should be lower case, while 1938 is upper case. IP: Logged |
