Hi, I recently acquired a few pieces of flatware. They are marked "SOLID PURITAN SILVER GRTD 30 YRS". They also are monogrammed with what seems to be CF. Can anyone supply me with any info on these? Thank you. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi eddie - I learned from Dorothy T. Rainwater's book Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers that the Puritan Silver Co. was part of Oneida. I highly recommend taking a look at the recommendations of books for beginning silverphiles: The SSF Library Project needs your help! or The SSF Library Project needs your help!!. I've found several of these extremely helpful! IP: Logged |

I believe they may be silverplated. A guarantee of years (30 years in the case of your flatware) is a common marking on silver plated objects that was used as a marketing tool at the time to give prospective buyers confidence that the plating will last a long time. IP: Logged |

Puritan is one of the many strange marks we encounter. Hagan shows it as being used by both Oneida and International. Which indicates that the mark refers to a retailer or more likely a promotional method of moving the silver to the ultimate owner. It probably was owned by a company that sold under the Puritan name. The firm had silverplate made on a bid basis, which would indicate that the same pattern was made by both firms, depending on who came in with the lowest bid. IP: Logged |
