Hi, I've recently acquired a tea set, that I'm assuming is silverplate, it doesn't say "sterling" on it. It has a small teapot, creamer, sugar and tray. The set looks old. On the bottom, see pic (hopefully it's there), is an R in a shield, an F in a circle and an M in a diamond. I've looked through many maker's mark books and cannot find this mark??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! IP: Logged |

Hi and welcome to the forum! There is not much people here can tell you unless you post a good photo of your objects and closeups of the markings, and unless you give us a better idea of why you are asking. Please read the post at the top of the page where it says, "Please read before you post" If you are unsure about how to post photos, please read the helpful instructions by clicking on the "How to post photos" link that is found just under the green box at the top of the page. Please add the additional information to your original post using the edit icon at the top of your post - do not keep making new posts for the same topic. We will try to help you. IP: Logged |

There was a silversmith using this mark around 1900 on pieces assayed in Sheffield (England). Does your teaset have any other marks? - in particular a lion passant (walking lion), a crown and a letter. IP: Logged |

Hi, I'm sorry for the, what you must experiences as tedious, mistakes. I really appreciate all of your help! Another question, When I respond to a question, do I respond "this way" or do I reply to the email? I know this is probably a stupid question, but if I reply "this way" how do I know that the person I'm replying to knows that I've replied to them? Tom and Kimo, I "replied" to your emails--which you probably didn't get? Thank you! PhilO, The only marks that I can see are in the picture? Thank you! Elizabeth P.S. I added a picture of the tea set. IP: Logged |

It is best to respond by replying on the forum so that everyone benefits from the discussion. I never got an e-mail from you. Tom IP: Logged |

I did not receive an email either. As Tom says, the etiquette is to reply by adding to the post you began so that everyone can read and benefit from the discussion rather than by communicating through private emails. One way to envision this forum is to imagine that all of the people visting here are all sitting in Scott and June's (our forum hosts) living room having tea and scones and chatting about our common interest in silver.
