[26-0473] I have several spoons marked "Newark Silver" on the back, which were from my grandmother. Ulysses Dietz suggested I ask my question of this forum, as he had no information on this company. I'm hoping someone has heard of it. IP: Logged |

Do these have any kind of pattern or design? This may be from Newark NJ. But this is a town name that does repeat. I believe there is a Newark Ohio. And probably other places. Could you post a picture? IP: Logged |

I wonder if this isn't another euphemism [or tradename] for nickel-silver [or EPNS], rather than a company name - similar to 'Nevada Silver', 'Norwegian Silver', and 'Peru Silver'. [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 06-04-2005).] IP: Logged |

These look like soda fountain spoons. Which really did not change much in form from the 1870's onward. Was there ever a Newark soda fountain supply company. Which would probably been part of a glass company. I seem to recall that Cambridge Glass was located in Newark Ohio. Just rambling here, raising more questions than answers. IP: Logged |

Great ideas, all. We had previously determined that these were not Newark, NJ, at least through City Directory searches. They didn't look quite like any flatware forms I know, and the soda fountain idea is brilliant. Especially the association with a Newark (Ohio) glass company that would have manufactured sofa fountain glasses. IP: Logged |

What an inspiration! Thanks! I just found the Newark, Ohio Public Library site which has an "Ask the Librarian" section, so I emailed them with the question of whether any glass companies also made silverware for fountain items. We'll see what they come up with. IP: Logged |

I suspect the issue is not so much 'made' as 'sold'. It seems logical that a glass company would have made soda fountain glasses. These did not change form or size much over a long period of time. Glass collectors have ways of dating examples, which are of varying degrees of plausibility. But to offer a complete line for their customers, the glass company would need to offer the spoons and mixers that would go with the glass. Which they could have had private labled marks and come from a silver makers. To my mind, and I am not a real scholar, the likely suspects are Tufts (mark of American Soda Fountain Supply Co) and Oneida. Spoons of this type marked Tufts are findable. Oneida apparently would put any mark desired on products if you bought enough. Beyond that, check out the soda fountain collectors books and sites. Someone may have found the connection already. In looking at silverplate, I alway remind myself that commercial forms endure for very long periods of time. The needs of restaurants don't change much over long periods of time, like a century. Sometimes, just the mark changes. With no clear pattern. IP: Logged |

Error alert: it turns out Cambridge was not in Newark O. Heisey was. Heisey was a major glass maker for a long time. They produced tableware, commercial glass and bottles with a wide variety of items. There are catalog reprints for Heisey, and a very active collector base. Sorry for the confusion. IP: Logged |
