Greetings, I have no Idea why these makers can't make it easier to identify their work. If someone could help me with identifying the date of my dish it would be appreciated. I have pics but do not have any web space to use for them. The mark on the bottom of the dish is "MAPPIN & WEBB Ltd". Off to the side is a hand etched mark reading "TRIPLE DEPOSIT" --over a "nazi symbol" with only three arms instead of four --over "PRINCE'S PLATE" --over "Rc 71552". If someone out there can make out the jumble I have mentioned I thank you. IP: Logged |

There are several places where you can upload your photos for free - photobucket.com is one such place. All you need to do is click on the link just under the green box at the top of this page where is says "How to post photos" and it will take you through the steps. Please be sure to reduce the pixel size of your photos to keep within the guidelines. There is not much anyone can tell you about your silverplated plate without photos. IP: Logged |

Trapper, May I ask :- what is the purpose of your request? Are you researching the item for yourself? IP: Logged |

My wife and I started collecting a couple of years ago because glass and pottery were in harms way from our three children. We can handle a dent or two but it is the cracks that were hard to swallow. We have several pieces and all are identified except for the date on this piece and the maker and date on a sterling ashtray. I have given up trying to find the M & W date but am giving myself a couple of more weeks on the ashtray before I humble myself before the pros. IP: Logged |

If the Rd number is 71,932, this indicates the design of your piece was registered in April 1887 - although of course your piece might have been made several years later. IP: Logged |

Sorry, either your photo is poor or, more probably, my eyes! Either way it's the same difference. These numbers are not Mappin & Webb numbers, but rather a sequence allocated by the British government for designs which were officially registered. It seems that silver collectors lag behind glass collectors in analysing these registrations (which can still be consulted at the Public Record Office in London). According to research on Victorian glass, the number 71528 was entered on 06-Apr-1887, while 71736 was entered on 09-Apr-1887. More information on these numbers, as well as the curious lozenge system which preceeded them, can be found at British Registered Design numbers, (1842 to World War II) IP: Logged |

At the other 'end' to where the Princess Plate marks are is there nothing to see (like a letter in a shield?). - Mappin & Webb did have a date-letter system to enable them to keep firmer stock control - it is just not published. Your piece can't be before 1898 as the Ltd. protection wasn't taken up by Mappin & Webb until then. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the info. I thought the Ltd would come into play on this piece. I could not find a source to elaborate on the name changes of M & W. There are no other marks though. I will keep the web sources for the numbers. My knowledge of silver increases daily thanks to everyones expertise. I have found that the biggest thrill in collecting silver is when you have an unknown piece and you are able to track down its origin. IP: Logged |
