I have an Elkington mug dated I think 1866 {D inside a square with two corners clipped}.

I wondered if anyone can help me with the marks on the side? There's a small oval shape and inside it; a crown {at the top} 'R' {to the right} '6' {at the bottom} and 'G' {to the left}. I understand it may be hard without a photo {my camera is hallmark shy} but I hope some one can help.

Other marks on the bottom of the cup; E&CO in a shield, ELKINGTON MONARCHY PLATE and the numbers 35129.

Elkington generally made silverplate rather than sterling items, and your "Elkington Monarchy Plate" is certainly silverplate. Elkington did however use date letters. The numbers 1 to 8 were used between 1841 and 1848. The alphabetical sequences were introduced in 1849 with the letter K. The sequence was restarted in 1865, 1886 and 1912.

The Crown GR mark is almost certainly an official weights & measures mark - indicating the mug held a full measure. GR would stand for George Rex (either George V, 1910 to 1936, or George VI, 1936 - 52).
The number 6 might refer to the king, or more probably to the number of the office which undertook the marking. I believe 6 is currently used by Birmingham (and Elkington, of course, are a Birmingham company).

This suggests date of 1916 seems possible.
