Hello everyone,

I'm so pleased I discovered these forums. I have a query (my first) regarding a small teapot that I found in an opshop/thrift shop very recently. It has a gorgeous shape which is art deco in design. See pics below.

It does have some age as the silverplate has worn down to the nickle silver underneath in two small areas near the handle. The teapot (which I think is a bachelors teapot?) measures 15.5cm (6") from handle to spout tip and the height is 8cm (3 1/4") from the top of the hinged lid knob. It is stamped underneath "Empire Plate" E.P. A1 N.S. Can anyone tell me about "Empire Plate", company details, years etc. I couldn't find anything on Google. I would like to know whether this teapot is from the 1930's or whether it was made much later copying the art deco look. I will still love my pot either way but it's nice to know these things especially if I spy any more. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Empire Silver Plate Company: Brooklyn, NY. Advertised in 1896 JW and JC&HR as manufacturers and importers of silverplated hollowwares. Last record found for Empire Silver Plate Co. was in 1931.

Thank you so much for yor reply Abe and for confirming that "Empire Plate" is one and the same as "Empire Silver Plate Company". I did come across the later company in a search but as the names were different and it was American it threw me a bit. As I live in Australia I was assuming that my teapot was most likely made by an English/Australian company. I'm not going to make assumptions again :-) Also its nice to know that my teapot comes from the 20's/30's. Now my bargain buy seems even more of a bargain. Your help has been much appreciated.

This looks to be a piece used in a restaurant or rail road. Frequently, the small teapots were commercial items that had the function of providing a serving. This is a nice piece far away from its place of creation. Must have had a wandering spirit.

Hi Dale,

Yes, what you say makes sense. This pot is actually very heavy for its size so I assume it was designed for a lot of heavy use. It's in excellent condition for its age (apart from the plate wearing a little thin in places), not a dent or ding and the hinged lid shuts perfectly. Not bad for AUD$x.00! No more wandering for this little pot. It now has a lovely new home. Thank you for your reply.
